From the Desk of The Head Golf Professional

Barry Loman

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for taking care of our golf course. Filling divots and repairing ball marks is an important part of keeping our course in top shape.  We have also been making an effort to take care of the driving range tee, so you will see that the range opens at 8:00 am instead of 7:00 am on Monday and Friday.  The practice hole is also an area that we would like to keep looking nice, so please only hit a few balls onto the green, not 30 or 40.  When finished using the practice hole, we would ask that you fill your divots and repair your ball marks.  I am sure with your help we can continue to keep the golf course and practice areas in tip top shape.

We have been actively updating the website www.lakespivey.net, and now have a members only web page for your use.  Your member name is MEMBER and your password is BIRDIE.  On this page you can access tournament results, take an online golf lesson, monitor your handicap and take advantage of online specials.   There is also a comment corner where you can give us your input.

TIP OF THE MONTH:

CURE YOUR SLICE

& CONTROL YOUR HOOK

Do you have an awful slice?  Have you ever thought you will never ever be able to hit a draw or hook?  No matter what you’ve read about inside out path or downswing cures, most likely the problem is not in your downswing.  The problem is in your backswing.  Simply put, most students open the club so far on the backswing, no matter how hard they try it will be open at impact.  Next time you’re out on the range try this simple tip.

When taking the club back, point the palm of your right hand straight back behind you which should bend your right wrist back, flattening your left.  This puts the club in a square or closed position, which will produce a straight or draw ball flight.  Remember, your old habit was to try to close the club on the downswing, so it is possible you will go from a slice to a hook.  If that happens you’re on the right track, and then will need to learn not to flip or roll those wrists in the downswing.  By simply turning your hips earlier and completely in the downswing you can learn to fight off the hook.
